Mathematics as a muscle memory
Vignesh M
In today’s world, where a healthy lifestyle is essential, schools play a critical role in promoting physical activity. However, there is an increasing emphasis on academics, and physical education classes often take a back seat. To address this issue, DNU SMBM National Public School has developed a teaching approach called “Math as Muscle Memory” that incorporates physical activity while teaching mathematics.
Do you remember the times in school when we would step out of the classroom for physical education training? It was enjoyable and kept us active. Unfortunately, we only had this period once or twice a week, which is not enough to make a significant impact on our health.
Our pedagogy involves teaching mathematical concepts like multiplication tables and line segments while incorporating physical activities. For example, students tap, clap, and jump while shouting multiplication tables, making it a fun and engaging activity. Similarly, in the line segment race, students run and form different line segments, intuitively understanding the properties of line segments.
This approach has been successful in promoting physical activity among students while teaching them mathematics. By incorporating physical activity into the curriculum, schools can play an essential role in promoting a healthy lifestyle among students. This has not only made the subject more enjoyable and engaging but has also improved students’ overall health and well-being.
Reflection
Mathematics is a subject that requires practice and repetition to master. By incorporating physical activity into the teaching of math, the pedagogy of “Math as a Muscle Memory” helps students remember mathematical concepts better. Physical activity stimulates the brain and helps in the formation of new neural connections, which results in better retention of information.
The benefits of physical activity are well documented. It not only improves physical health but also has a positive impact on mental health. Physical activity helps reduce stress and anxiety, improves mood, and helps in developing a positive self-image. By incorporating physical activity into the curriculum, schools can help students develop a healthy lifestyle, which can have a positive impact on their overall well-being.
Suggestions and tips
- Incorporate physical activity into the curriculum to promote a healthy lifestyle among students.
- Make learning fun and engaging by incorporating physical activities while teaching different subjects.
- Encourage students to participate in physical activities by making it a part of their daily routine.
- Create a safe and supportive environment for students to participate in physical activities.
Conclusion
Math as a Muscle Memory is a fantastic way to promote physical activity among students while teaching them mathematics. By incorporating physical activity into the curriculum, schools can play an essential role in promoting a healthy lifestyle among students. It is crucial to create a safe and supportive environment for students to participate in physical activities while making learning fun and engaging. By doing so, schools can help students develop a love for learning and improve their overall well-being.
