Grow with math – a child-friendly programme
Sudha Ganesh Chella
diksa learning centre has been working with children with specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, a condition that makes reading and understanding language a struggle.
Since a major portion of mathematics is transacted through language, our students were finding the subject challenging, and so we wanted to bring changes to the way we were teaching math.
In 2013, two of our teachers came across a primary math programme presented at a conference by Mr Sundaram. They felt that it would be ideal for our students.
We started working with Mr Sundaram from 2014. He introduced us to Shri P K Srinivasan‘s work in the area of school mathematics. Mr Sundaram conducted a series of training sessions for all our teachers covering the entire school math curriculum up to grade 6. The sessions focused on understanding math concepts by adopting visual and kinaesthetic strategies developed by Shri PKS.
Our teachers customized the methodology and designed innovative teaching approaches and activity sheets suitable for our students. The results were amazing. The students enjoyed the programme because they were able to understand the concepts and the relevance of math in their lives. They even developed their own simple math worksheets.
We quickly realized that we were probably one of the very few institutions with a fully developed math program suitable for children with learning difficulties. So, we reached out to other institutions working in this area and started conducting topic specific online training sessions for teachers. Since parents play a critical role in teaching their children, diksa started conducting online training programmes for parents as well. These are links to the testimonials of a few parents who participated in our programmes.

Technology can never replace conceptual understanding. We thank Shri P K Srinivasan for developing a comprehensive and innovative methodology that is easy to teach and easier to learn.
