‘Curiosity’ by NCERT: transforming science education with competency-based learning
Shubhangi Raajput

NCERT’s new class 6 science textbook “Curiosity” marks a significant shift in India’s educational landscape, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. This innovative textbook represents a departure from traditional rote learning methods, embracing a more holistic approach that combines competency-based learning with India’s rich scientific heritage. Following are the key features of the new textbook.

In this article, we will explore two major aspects of the textbook, i.e., competency-based learning and the integration of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS).
Shaping education through competencies
Competency-based learning (CBL), the textbook’s main emphasis, is demonstrated by thoughtfully crafted elements that emphasize skill development rather than memorization. Through interactive exercises, real-world applications, and practical experiments, students get exposed to scientific ideas. For example, students conduct hands-on experiments to investigate how plants adapt to various settings rather than merely learning the definition of photosynthesis.
Higher-order thinking skills are the focus of a newly redesigned evaluation technique. Case studies and real-world issues that call for analytical and critical thinking have supplanted traditional question-answer forms. Students studying the water cycle, for instance, might address actual water scarcity problems by using their knowledge of evaporation and condensation to suggest solutions.
Connecting contemporary science and traditional wisdom
“Curiosity” stands out for its smooth blending of modern scientific concepts with IKS. The textbook uses some instances to highlight India’s great scientific legacy:
A real example of metallurgy that showcases advanced ancient techniques of engineering is the Iron Pillar of Delhi. Step-wells (baolis) and check dams (Johads), two traditional water-conservation techniques, are shown with contemporary sustainability concepts, highlighting the value of indigenous wisdom in tackling today’s environmental issues.
Along with including traditional medicine and Ayurvedic concepts, the textbook explains the scientific rationale for the usage of popular plants like turmeric and neem. Students gain an appreciation for how conventional methods fit with current scientific knowledge thanks to this method.
Developing 21st century competencies
By encouraging debates and group projects, “Curiosity” helps students learn how to work together and communicate effectively. By integrating physics, mathematics, social sciences, and environmental studies, the interdisciplinary method offers a more thorough comprehension of scientific ideas.
Students are encouraged to assess their comprehension and think about the real-world applicability of scientific ideas in their daily lives through regular “Think and Reflect” portions. This part of self-assessment aids in the development of metacognitive abilities that are essential for lifelong learning.
Curiosity represents a paradigm shift in science education, making it more learner-centric, application-based, and competency-driven. By fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and real-world application, it ensures that students develop not just knowledge, but the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. It integrates India’s rich scientific heritage with modern scientific understanding, helping students appreciate the depth of India’s contributions to global science. By embedding IKS in various chapters, it ensures that learning is not just global and contemporary but also deeply rooted in indigenous knowledge.
Characteristics of chapter end assessment:

Keeping in mind the spirit of NEP 2020 and NCF, the assessment encompasses various elements
- The assessment effectively integrates knowledge, analysis, application, and inquiry-based learning.
- It caters to different cognitive levels, from recall to problem-solving.
- Engages students in real-world problem-solving and awareness-building regarding nutrition and food sustainability.
Emphasis on contextualization
Post every exercise there are various suggestive extended learning activities mentioned for contextualization. These activities can be effectively used by teachers to connect the dots from various subjects and create a sense of national pride.
Inclusion of Indian scientists’ contribution
This new textbook has made a conscious effort to include the contribution of Indian scientists under the caption “Know your scientist”
Creation of future citizens
There are a lot of activities in the text as well as extended learning, which are designed carefully. These can easily be emulated in the classroom in various ways. The intent is to create awareness among young learners about local and global issues. The fun yet organized activities are excellent ways to create more informed and sensitive future citizens.
In conclusion, this textbook represents a progressive step towards modernizing science education in India. Its alignment with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 ensures that students receive a holistic, culturally enriched, and competency-based education, preparing them to navigate and contribute effectively to the contemporary world.
