A celebration of science and discovery: IISc Bengaluru Open Day 2025

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru hosted its annual Open Day on March 1, 2025, transforming its sprawling campus into a vibrant hub of scientific exploration and discovery. This event, held from 9 am to 5 pm, offered the public a unique opportunity to delve into the world of cutting-edge research and innovation.

A spectrum of scientific showcases

The Open Day featured a diverse array of activities designed to engage and inspire visitors of all ages. Departments and centres across the campus organized popular lectures, experimental demonstrations, poster presentations, quiz contests, scientific competitions, and exhibitions. These events provided attendees with a comprehensive view of the institute’s advancements in science and technology.

Special activities were tailored for young students, aiming to ignite their interest in science and technology. Hands-on demonstrations allowed children to interact directly with scientific phenomena, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the subjects.

Departments at the forefront

Several departments stood out with their engaging presentations:

  • Department of Aerospace Engineering offered simulations and models of aircraft and spacecraft, allowing visitors to grasp the complexities of aerodynamics and design.
  • Centre for Neuroscience displayed interactive exhibits on brain function, providing insights into neural networks and cognitive processes.
  • Department of Materials Engineering showcased innovations in nanotechnology and material sciences, highlighting their applications in various industries.
  • Department of Computer Science and Automation presented the latest in artificial intelligence and machine learning, including real-time demonstrations of AI applications.
  • Department of Civil Engineering featured a fascinating exhibit on crowd control risk models, using real-time sensor data. This system which had collected data during the Maha Kumbh Mela, demonstrated how data analytics can help prevent stampedes and manage large gatherings efficiently henceforth.
  • Centre for Water Sciences demonstrated a ground water survey and forecasting model that utilizes satellite and sensor data. Visitors learned how this technology helps predict water availability and manage resources sustainably.
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering displayed the quirky Cibycle, a bicycle that turns left when the handlebars are turned right, and vice versa. This counterintuitive engineering experiment had visitors attempting (and failing) to ride it, emphasizing the importance of muscle memory and adaptability in mechanical control systems.
  • Department of Materials Science allowed visitors to play with an intriguing non-Newtonian fluid – a type of “play dough” that felt gooey when a hand was gently immersed but turned rock solid when punched. This demonstration beautifully illustrated the principles of rheology and material behaviour under different forces.

Children immersed in discovery

The atmosphere was electric with the enthusiasm of young minds. Children navigated through exhibits with wide-eyed curiosity, participating in experiments that transformed theoretical concepts into tangible experiences. The hands-on nature of the demonstrations enabled them to connect classroom learning with real-world applications, making science both accessible and exciting.

Parents observed their children’s engagement with pride, noting how such experiences could spark a lifelong interest in STEM fields. The interactive environment encouraged questions and exploration, allowing children to envision themselves as future scientists and innovators.

The lasting impact on young minds

Exposure to scientific environments during the formative years plays a crucial role in shaping future aspirations. Research indicates that early engagement in science activities can significantly influence academic choices and career paths. A study evaluating out-of-school science activities for primary school children found that such experiences increased knowledge and interest in science, effects that were sustained over several years and influenced later academic choices in secondary school.

By interacting with scientists and witnessing real-world applications of scientific principles, children can see the tangible outcomes of pursuing a career in STEM. This early exposure demystifies complex subjects and builds confidence, making the prospect of a career in science or engineering more attainable.

A community united in learning

The Open Day also served as a platform for community building, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds with a shared interest in science and technology. Families, educators, students, and professionals mingled, exchanging ideas and fostering a collective appreciation for the role of science in society.

Such events highlight the importance of community engagement in education, demonstrating that learning extends beyond the classroom. They provide a space where curiosity is celebrated and the seeds of innovation are sown.

The samosa and ice cream stalls were also teeming with eager kids and happy parents sharing and swapping stories! What joy on their faces!
